Thread Vein Treatment

Our skin clinic in West Hagbourne uses the latest technology to help banish thread veins and other skin imperfections, and offers state of the art skin rejuvenation treatments that really work.

Thread veins or ‘spider veins’ are tiny veins in your skin that show up on the surface as thin blue/red lines. They are different to varicose veins which have a thicker, lumpy appearance which you can feel under the skin.

Some people get thread veins along with varicose veins, although you can have one without the other. The difference is that there aren’t usually any other symptoms with thread veins (unlike varicose veins, which can be painful) but they can be quite visible and so if you would like to reduce the appearance of your thread veins, we can help, using the latest in IPL technology.

We will treat your thread veins with our incredibly precise IPL laser treatment which breaks down veins and broken capillaries without doing any damage to the surrounding outer layers of your skin. In addition to removing the unsightly thread veins, the IPL treatment also helps to improve the overall appearance of your skin, rejuvenating your skin by evening out the skin tone and encouraging the production of collagen. It’s one of the most effective treatments for thread veins on the market and we are really impressed with the results we’ve seen so far.

We usually recommend between one and three treatments for thread veins, depending on the severity, and spaced out over a few weeks, but when you come in for a one to one consultation, our specially trained aesthetic beauty therapist will advise you and create a tailored treatment programme just for you.

Why do people get thread veins?

Thread veins are extremely common. Most people have some (although they may not want to tell you). There is often an inherited component, for example, identical twins often have the same type of thread veins in the same areas of the body. So if your parents have had thread veins you can blame them. Hormonal factors can contribute, so that thread veins often appear in pregnancy (usually they go away again afterwards).

Women who have had several pregnancies are more likely to develop thread veins than those who have never been pregnant. Thread veins can be associated with varicose veins (see below). Lots of other things can sometimes cause thread including injuries and cuts, exposure to sunlight (usually on the face) exposure to radiation, for example radiotherapy treatment of cancers can sometimes cause thread veins in the skin.

How can thread veins be treated?

IPL® (MPL®) technology triggers the collapse of the veins and broken capillaries without doing any damage to the surrounding outer layers of skin. It also improves the overall appearance of the skin by evening out skin tone and encouraging the production of collagen.

IPL® (MPL®) uses multiple wavelengths of light to treat the dilated blood vessels in the face. The structures and blood vessels causing the capillaries to flare up absorb the precise energy level and various wavelengths of light that are emitted from the IPL® (MPL®) technology. Effectively, the light waves are absorbed by haemoglobin (the substance that gives blood the reddish, purple colour) and converted into heat. This heat causes the walls of the vein to collapse which, in turn, stops the blood flow. Once this happens, the vein is slowly absorbed into the body, disappearing from sight. With the right course of treatment, the look of facial veins and capillaries become visibly reduced (or disappear) resulting in a more rejuvenated, younger look. SkinFirst use radio frequency in conjunction with the IPL® (MPL®) light, to create additional heat thus enabling the light to be emitted at a lower energy setting in cases where skin colour may dictate this to be preferable. It also works synergistically with the IPL® for a more successful outcome than IPL® on its own.

Which veins can be treated?

Thread veins on all parts of your body can be treated. The most common treatments are for superficial veins in the facial, chest or leg areas. As the treatment relies on absorption of light by the haemoglobin in the blood, the most effective results are seen with light skin. The lighter the skin, the more pronounced the contrast between the vessel and the skin, making treatment easier. However, the inclusion of radio frequency in the treatments offered by Bare Essentials ensure a more successful outcome with darker skin types than IPL alone.

Does it hurt?

Tolerance of pain is very individual from person to person. No anaesthetics are required, and most people describe the sensation as similar to that of a rubber band snapping onto the skin, followed by a warm sensation lasting several minutes. You may find it comforting to cool the skin after the treatment; but most people find the treatment extremely tolerable and do not need to cool the skin. We do apply aloe vera to the area after the treatment to cool the skin down.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on the body site and the severity of the thread veins. IPL treatments combined with radio frequency, can be given as often as once every three weeks in order to achieve the desired results. Depending upon the extent of the problem, several treatments may be necessary. Sometimes just one or two will suffice.
