Acne skin

Acne is often associated with teenagers and puberty; however, it will actually affect up to 85% of people at some point in their life. It is also often associated with oily skin, but again this is not always the case as many factors can contribute to the condition. A lot of people can suffer with both oily and dry skin and are usually using the wrong products to help treat their skin problems.

There are five grades of acne:

  • Grade 1

Open and closed (blackheads) comedones usually in the t-zone area of the face and possibly excess oil production. No inflammation will be present.
  • Grade 2

Open and closed comedones, with some papules and pustules (spots with or without yellow/white centres).
  • Grade 3

Papules and pustules across the t-zone and cheeks of the face. These spots may also be present on the chest and back at this grade.
  • Grade 4

Comedones, papules and pustules over the entire face with high inflammation levels. The condition may also be present on the chest and back. There may also be painful nodules and sometimes cysts.
  • Grade 5

At grade 5, the condition will be highly inflamed and chronic in all areas. Nodules and cysts will also be present on the face, chest and back.

Oily skin

Notice that your skin emits a little extra shine? Fact is, everyone has oil in their skin. Under each of your pores is a sebaceous gland that produces natural oils called sebum. This helps keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

In some people, though, the sebaceous glands can produce too much oil. This creates oily skin.

You know you have oily skin if your skin constantly looks shiny, and you go through several blotting sheets a day. Oily skin can even feel greasy within hours of cleansing.

Breakouts are also more likely because the sebum mixes with dead skin cells and gets stuck in your pores.

The causes of oily skin include genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. While you can’t necessarily get rid of oily skin, you can take steps to make your skin less oily. The key is to identify one or more of these seven underlying causes.

Dry skin

Dry skin is often temporary — you get it only in winter, for example — but it may be a lifelong condition. Signs and symptoms of dry skin depend on your age, your health, where you live, time spent outdoors and the cause of the problem. Dry skin is likely to cause one or more of the following:

  • A feeling of skin tightness, especially after showering, bathing or swimming
  • Skin that feels and looks rough
  • Itching
  • Slight to severe flaking, scaling or peeling
  • Fine lines or cracks
  • Gray, ashy skin
  • Redness
  • Deep cracks that may bleed

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. This can make spots or patches of skin appear darker than surrounding areas. When the skin is exposed to excessive UV rays or has long term sun exposure, the melanocytes within our skin’s epidermis (surface layers) produce excess melanin.

Hormones can also affect melanocytes, and the resulting hyperpigmentation is called Melasma. This is commonly seen in pregnancy or can result from certain contraceptive medicines. The patches of pigmentation tend to be symmetrical on the face and can extend over large areas of the forehead, cheeks and upper lip areas. This pigmentation will usually fade after pregnancy or the contraception being stopped, however, it may never disappear completely without treatment.

Trauma to the skin  can also cause hyperpigmentation, especially in darker skins. This is referred to as Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation . This pigmentation can be restricted to the top layers of skin but can go much deeper depending on the severity of the trauma.

Dehydrated skin means that your skin is lacking water. It can be dry and itchy and perhaps dull looking, too. Your overall tone and complexion may appear uneven, and fine lines are more noticeable.

While dehydrated skin can be a nuisance, it’s relatively easy to treat with the right lifestyle changes. Treatment begins from the inside out to replenish and maintain hydration throughout your body.

Dehydrated skin can appear dry, but it’s not the same has having a dry skin type.

Rosacea is a skin condition that’s usually found on the facial skin. It ranges in severity – some people have a mild version of rosacea that causes slight redness and isn’t too problematic, while other people can be quite seriously affected with thickened skin and areas that have become enlarged.

There isn’t a complete cure for rosacea, but it can be treated so that the symptoms are more manageable. We use a few different treatments at Bare Essentials to help treat rosacea and to help improve the condition of your skin.

Ageing skin

There are two types of ageing when it comes to our skin.

Natural, biological (intrinsic) ageing known as chronological ageing.

And, Premature (extrinsic) ageing.

As you enter your 30s, your skin slows down its production of collagen, the protein that gives your skin its shape. Collagen is what helps your skin bounce back and stay plump.

With less collagen in the skin, it’s easier for visible wrinkles and sagging to occur. You might notice this happening more in areas around frequently used muscles, like the forehead, or where you’re more exposed to the sun.

When external environmental factors (that could be avoided) accelerate the ageing process, this is known as extrinsic aging or Premature ageing. The main culprit for this is exposure to the UV rays of the sun. However, there are a number of other factors such as poor diet, medication, stress, pollution, and other lifestyle choices, which also impact.

All these factors cause free radical activity in the skin and this prevents it from functioning effectively, causing a further decrease in collagen production.

Premature ageing can result in fine lines and wrinkles and an overall sagging of the skin. Other signs can include the skin appearing thin and fragile, and pigment issues such as sunspots.

The CryoPen emits a fine jet of nitrous oxide under high pressure, which allows the clinician to work with millimetre precision. This destroys the tissue by freezing the inter-cellular fluid, forming ice shards and crystals which rupture the membrane, thereby destroying the cell. That means there will be no collateral damage to healthy tissue. It’s so incredibly accurate and practical.

CryoPen is an advanced cryotherapy innovation that is a fast, effective, safe and new solution for removal of skin imperfections. … Cosmetic procedures such as skin tags, milia and cherry angiomas are no longer being treated by many doctors on the NHS.

Thread Vein Removal body

Thread vein removal at Bare Essentials with Dr Martina Pirklova

Microsclerotherapy is the treatment designed to manage problem veins from telangiectasia to small reticular veins. The best treatment for these small veins is using a sclerosing agent such as Fibrovein. Lasers are sometimes used to treat thread veins in the legs, but comparative trials show microsclerotherapy to be superior. (Laser is superior for the face.) If you also have larger varicose veins, then treating these is often also necessary to control the appearance of more thread veins.

Your initial consultation is very important for assessment of veins you are concerned about but we can generally treat any minor thread veins on the body and legs (microsclerotherapy is not indicated for any veins below your ankles and on your feet).

Fibrovein is the trade name of a detergent based chemical called sodium tetradecyl sulphate and is licensed for treatment of varicose veins and thread veins.

Fibrovein blocks the veins by irreversibly damaging the blood vessel walls. The solution irritates the lining of the vein causing the walls of the vein to stick together. Blood stops flowing through the veins which are then absorbed by the body’s natural defence mechanism.

The area of thread veins to be treated is cleaned with an alcohol or antiseptic.

An ultra fine gauge needle is inserted into the lower layer of the skin. Once a vein has been entered the solution is injected slowly for 15 – 20 seconds until the area of thread vein disappears or skin bleeding / or a visible pink reaction occurs.

The needle is removed and pressure applied to the injection site with sterile gauze . The process is repeated on other areas of thread veins in the same leg. Once the procedure is complete, compression stockings are applied.

The procedure takes approximately 45-60 minutes.

· Take a brisk walk immediate post treatment

· Wear the compression hosiery day and night for first 3 days and daytime only for 2 weeks

· Avoid extreme temperatures avoid sun exposure

· Avoid flying for 4 weeks

· No leg waxing for 6 weeks

· Avoid high impact exercise for 2 weeks

· Keep mobile encouraging daily walking

You will be able to return to work almost immediately.

You can commence driving as long as the discomfort allows.

Some bruising may appear and can last anything from two weeks to three months depending on the size of the blood vessels treated. The treated areas can look worse before they improve as a result of the bruising. With patience a good result is achieved. .

Some patients need more than one treatment to get the best results. I would recommend further treatment after three months if any remaining veins have not disappeared.

Whilst there are no perfect results, 60% of people experience a very good result cosmetically. Patients find that over time a few more thread veins may appear and it is common for an annual or bi-annual tidy-up visit.

The common side effects and complications are:

Bruise, Raised Red areas, Aching in the leg, Brown lines or pigmentation marks on the skin, Matting

Very rare complications associated with this treatment are allergic reaction, ulcers, migraine, deep vein thrombosis, inflammation and stroke.

Careful consideration is given if you have any of the following problems:

· Presence of varicose veins

· immobility

· uncontrolled diabetic

· pregnancy and breastfeeding

· known allergy to Fibrovein

· history of deep vein thrombosis

· ischemic heart disease and arterial disease.

· thrombophlebitis

· varicosities caused by pelvic/abdominal tumours

· patients on warfarin

· patients with pacemaker

· infectious skin conditions

· obesity

· planned long flights

Generally speaking, we recommend to plan for 2-3 treatment sessions approximately 2-3 months apart. It takes up to another 3 months after your visit before you see the final result.

This is simply 15 minutes long appointment when we carefully assess those veins your are concerned about and advise you whether this treatment will give you a good results. We also measure your legs for your hosiery provided after the first treatment. There is no charge for your consultation.

The length and the number of treatment sessions required is very individual and we will try to create a treatment plan based on your needs. Please try to be prepared for 2-3 treatments as a minimum. These appointments are typically 2-3 month apart.

1ST SESSION (including high quality hosiery) from £300

I was born Amanda but given the nickname ‘Bob’  from a character on TV  in ‘Blackadder’ & it has stuck with me for over 20 years now, therefore explaining why a female makeup artist is called ‘Bob’! As most of my clients knew me by that nickname I decided to go by it in my professional work & business capacity to save the confusion of there being 2 of us!

I  was a fashion model for 20 years which is where I picked up all the tricks of my now trade. I spent hours sat in a make-up chair before shows, quizzing the make-up artist why she was doing this & why she was using that, so, after I had my daughter & ‘retired’ from the runway, I decided to put my knowledge to good use & share all I’d learnt from the best in the country.

Bob is offering volume lashes in Wantage:
